There has been word of an assassination plot against Redbeard, and as Avadon’s Hand, you must head out into the world of Lynaeus to investigate. You play as a “Hand” of Avadon, which basically translates to “little bitch”, tasked with all sorts of dangerous missions and quests. The agents of Avadon work somewhat under the radar, able to operate with impunity to complete their missions for Redbeard, the leader of the Pact. Avadon is the name of the main fortress within the Pact, and serves as the headquarters of the Pact’s “special forces”: Warriors, assassins, and bounty hunters all tasked with protecting the Pact’s lands and carrying out special operations within Farland territory when needed. On one side you have the Pact, a kind of “United Nations” of sorts, composed of powerful nation states, allied together to fend off the Farlands on the other side, a rag-tag group of Barbarians, thieves, and “once-great” empires. Gamers unite! But I digress…Īvadon: The Black Fortress, the first game in a proposed trilogy by developer Spiderweb Software, tells the tale of two warring factions on the fictional continent of Lynaeus. To harken back to these golden years of RPGs is to remember and celebrate some of the best and most innovative titles to ever grace a computer or television screen, and the kind that turned us into the modern gamers and nerds that we are today.
We didn’t have cell phones yet, and who the hell even knew what a 3D graphics card was yet?! Graphics were something we hadn’t become obsessed with yet, in a day where gameplay was King, and a game’s quality was measured not by its looks, but by its content! Starting to sound a little preachy? Well it should. Those were the days when you would settle in front of your computer, check your email over 56k modem to make sure you didn’t miss anything on the latest D&D bulletin board, and load up your boot disk to make sure everything ran well on your old 66mhz processor with 8 megabytes of RAM. Who says they don’t make good old role-playing games from the days of Ultima, Zork, Diablo, Lands of Lore, or Baldur’s Gate anymore? Games that grabbed on to your imagination, required patience and cunning precision and planning.
